Waste carpet recycling outlets grow throughout the UK

With more than 35 outlets in the UK accepting all types of waste carpet for re-use or recycling, retailers can make useful savings in disposal costs by diverting their fitting waste and uplifted old carpets from landfill, says Carpet Recycling UK. In Yorkshire and Lancashire, retailers have the opportunity to recycle their post-installation off-cuts.

Returning to the Harrogate Flooring Show on Stand M32, the industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet will be raising awareness with retailers about the growing opportunities for recycling and the tangible benefits for their businesses.

Extensive pilot trials involving sorting and collection of post-installation wastes are being evaluated by Carpet Recycling UK members to optimise the logistics cost and effectiveness of various methods.

Visitors to the CRUK stand can find out more about waste carpet recycling trials in their area.

CRUK will also be hosting a one-hour seminar at 2pm on Sunday September 2 with guest speakers sharing their waste carpet recycling experiences and highlighting innovative end uses for the material.

“Landfill taxes are going only one way – and that’s up. Add on transport and tipping charges and the cost of sending waste carpet to landfill averages around £100 per tonne in the UK,” explains Laurance Bird, CRUK Director.

“There is growing demand for clean post-installation off-cuts that can be recycled into higher value end uses, such as mattress pads, carpet underlay and insulation products. Recycling waste carpet is not only the right thing to do and something that consumers want to see happen, it makes sound financial sense too.”

CRUK welcomes enquiries from new members interested in driving new uses for waste carpet and can be contacted on 0161 440 8325 or visit www.carpetrecyclinguk.com.
