Mick Scutts is a modest man, but more than 40 years’ experience as an HGV owner-operator means that he knows a thing or two about the ins and outs of trucking. Haulage has taken him all over the country and beyond, but recent years have seen MRS Transport concentrating on the Southeast. His Orpington-based DAF XF is a familiar sight around Kent, mostly hauling aggregates for the likes of Tarmac and Hansons. His 28-tonne payload could be anything from 25 kg polybags of sharp sand to 1,000 kg bulk bags of gravel, destined for such household names as Wickes and B&Q.
You only survive four decades in haulage by being cost-efficient and Mick is no exception. With diesel representing a major cost item, he always knows exactly how much he is paying to refuel, to a fraction of a penny per litre. MRS Transport uses a Shell fuel card supplied by The Fuelcard People, part of The Fuel Card Group. Mick is notified each Friday of his refuelling price for the coming week, invariably offering real savings when compared with national average pump prices.
Mick Scutts said, “The Shell fuel card is convenient as I tend to refuel regularly at the same filling station, but it is reassuring to know that I can save money all over the country, if necessary. It is also good to know that I only pay for the fuel, with nothing added on top.”
Some fuel card suppliers add a £2 transaction fee to every refuelling. Steve Clarke, marketing manager for The Fuel Card Group, said: “The whole point of a fuel card is to reduce cost, which is hardly helped by hitting the customer with extra fees. We do not impose transaction charges or network fees and we never will.”
As well as access to cut-price Shell diesel at 1,100+ locations nationwide, Mick Scutts enjoys real personal service through a dedicated account manager. “If I ever need anything, I just call Louise on her direct line,” he said. “It is so much better than having to sit in a call centre queue before talking to somebody who has never heard of me. The Fuelcard People give me real savings, real convenience and real service. I could not ask for much more.”
He might not ask for more, but MRS Transport also benefits from paperless administration, with a single weekly VAT-compliant invoice covering all refuelling. There is also interest-free credit during the interval between refuelling and the automatic direct debit payment. If Mick Scutts wants to check his account at any time, he also has 24/7 access via secure Internet, including transactions not yet invoiced.
