Reprotec provides flooring solutions with 100% saving of any waste going into landfill
Reprotec was awarded a 2500m² project by a large, well known floor tiling contractor to provide a surface solution to a problematic concrete floor slab.
The specification was to install levelling compounds and adhesives, followed by large ceramic tiles. Prior to this, suitable and sufficient preparation was required by means of fully encapsulated steel shot blasting to ensure the correct adhesion was achieved by the materials specified.
After visiting the site and inspecting the area, the floor was found to be quite low in strength and compaction upon testing but the finish exhibited a heavy surface laitence as well as being of a very rough standard.
Blasting would have been very difficult and extremely slow on such a poor soft slab and the finished surface would have been very rough.
Approach and solution
Reprotec recommended diamond grinding the surface to ensure total removal of any laitance but also to help smooth out the slab surface.
While this was a more expensive option than blasting, the finished surface was flat and much smoother, meaning that a lot less smoothing underlayment was used.
The floor was completed within the contractor’s programme of works over a five-day period and alongside other trades as sections were handed back.
The process of diamond grinding was entirely dust free, due to the specification and modern design of the seamless bagging vacuum system.
This allows the dust to be removed from the vacuum without the operator coming into contact with the waste. The entire 900kgs of concrete dust produced during this process was collected and removed from site as part of our 100% diversion from landfill initiative.
