As the centrepiece of a brand new gallery at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Buckinghamshire, the author’s place of inspiration – his ‘Writing Hut’, required a suitable floor feature to showcase the star attraction. Forbo Flooring System’s Marmoleum provided the ideal solution, allowing an assortment of words to be cut into the floor covering using its unique Aquajet Technology.

The Museum, aimed at 6 to 12 year olds, features two fun and fact-packed biographical galleries and an interactive Story Centre, where visitors can read original archive material, see the author’s writing hut and have a go at activities that inspire creative writing, helping them to learn more about the famous author and how he wrote.

Catherine Halcrow, Director at Outside Studios, designers on the project, comments: “The intricate floor feature was to form a central part of the new gallery, providing a fun, vibrant and interactive area for visitors to learn more about the much-loved and world-famous writer. It was therefore essential to choose a floor covering that was durable, yet flexible enough to accommodate the complex cutting process for the medley of Roald Dahl’s most famous words, which would form the garden path and paving slabs up to the front of the hut and around the perimeter.”

Forbo Flooring System’s Marmoleum was an ideal solution offering a durable and truly sustainable material, which comes in a wide range of contemporary colours that Outside Studios could coordinate with the overall interior design theme. Widely recognised as one of the most sustainable flooring products available with more independent Eco-labels than any other floor covering, linoleum is a natural product and Forbo’s Marmoleum contains 97% natural raw materials, 72% of which are rapidly renewable and has a 43% recycled content.

Marmoleum’s Topshield, a unique water-based finish that provides inherent protection of the flooring system, not only maintains the overall performance of the flooring, but also ensures its aesthetics will stay looking good for years to come. The museum floor space, being a public area, is subjected to a high intensity of foot traffic; therefore it was essential the flooring system could be easily and cost effectively cleaned. In addition, Marmoleum is the only resilient floor covering to have been awarded the ‘Seal of Approval’ from Allergy UK thanks to the fact that is doesn’t harbour allergens an important consideration for the museum where many people will be visiting daily.

The intricate nature of the word pattern required specialist-cutting equipment and Forbo’s Aquajet technology certainly provides the best results when it comes to the reproduction of the most intricate designs; allowing for never-ending creativity.

“The Roald Dahl Museum was a chance to exhibit Forbo’s Marmoleum in a creative, vibrant environment. The precision cut Aquajet design enabled our skilled fitters to lay intricate word patterns and walkways within the wider design, bringing the museum to life, with the flooring as part of the overall interactive exhibits and displays,” comments Goff Power, Managing Director at Power Carpet Specialists based in High Wycombe, installers of the flooring.

Amelia Foster, Director of the Roald Dahl Museum said: “We have been delighted with the look of the Marmoleum floor and it has been used to great effect to reflect the different areas of our new gallery. As a holder of a Green Tourism Business Gold Award, we were also keen to use Marmoleum due to its eco-credentials.”
