Costcutter specifies Gerflor’s flooring in store refurbishments

As with all retailers, Costcutter is anxious to minimise loss of trading time when refurbishing stores. For this reason, the decision was taken to use Gerflor’s GTI fast track looselay tile flooring in two stores in Devon as the product is quickly and easily installed and offers outstanding performance and good aesthetics.

Costcutter is predominantly a franchise business and has over 1,700 convenience stores and off-licences across the UK and Republic of Ireland. In Devon, Stephen and Lynne Adams, the licensees of the Newton Abbott and Brixham stores, took little persuading to opt for GTI once they saw the product’s benefits. Traditionally, Costcutter had laid ceramic tile flooring which prolonged fit-out times as the floor area had to be totally cleared and the surfaces could not be walked on immediately.

The 200m² Newton Abbot store had GTI installed as part of an extensive refit that included new ceilings, lighting and fridges. The installation of the floor took one and a half nights and no trading time was lost as the store was open as normal.

Once Stephen and Lynne had experienced how easy the installation of the Newton Abbott store had been, they immediately went ahead with the installation of GTI in their 150m² Brixham store.

With no adhesive necessary, a dovetail joint connecting system makes the 635 x 635 GTI tiles quick and easy to install or replace and they are ideal for situations where the floor has to be kept in use with minimal disruption. When laying, little or no preparation of the subfloor is necessary and 7% humidity is acceptable.

The 6mm thick, multi-layered GTI Uni and Decor tiles have a wear group T rating, good slip resistance, contain recycled materials and are 100% recyclable. Across the GTI range 16 colours allow co-ordination with most decorative schemes.

Manufactured using a continuous high pressure process, GTI is reinforced with two glass fibre grids on either side of an intermediate pressed homogeneous layer. GTI Max benefits from a special reinforced formulation for improved resistance and static to dynamic loads. A polyurethane (PUR) surface treatment eases maintenance and avoids the application of acrylic emulsion/polishes after installation.

Stephen Adams comments: “The Gerflor product has been very, very successful and we didn’t lose any trading time whatsoever because of its installation. It’s fantastic and we’re really pleased with it. Its a nice floor with a good, flat surface and is really easy to keep clean. It’s also very hard wearing so you can roll pallets and cages on it. The reaction from customers has been ‘what an incredible difference’.”

Steve Young, Costcutter development manager for the south west, says: “The easy of using GTI compared to ceramic tiles was unbelievable and the installers were able to work around the fixtures. The Gerflor option is now seen as standard in other stores unless ceramic tiles are specifically requested.”
