Businesses Fail To Act On Employee Wellbeing

Three quarters of employers believe that unhealthy employees pose a business risk, yet 1 in 3 do not provide workplace health support, research by Bupa has found.

The healthcare specialists surveyed almost 1,800 employers and more than 17,000 workers across 5 different countries. Three in 4 (73%) employers said that a healthy workforce is more productive but 30% of employees said that they do not receive healthcare benefits from their employer.

Three in 10 (26%) employees said that their employer is ‘all talk no action’ when it comes to maintaining their wellbeing.

The UK survey of 4,000 employees and 1,000 employers found:

  • 64% of employers think that healthy employees are more productive
  • 58% of employers believe that unhealthy workers are a risk to business
  • 37% of UK employees said that their job has a negative effect on their physical health
  • 36% said their mental health is affected by their job.

Dr Fiona Adshead, director of wellbeing and public health, Bupa, said:

“There is enormous potential for ensuring more people adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce their risk of chronic disease by engaging them in their place of work. What’s more, smart employers know that healthier employees come to work, perform at their best and go the extra mile.

“With half the world’s population in employment, helping people to be healthier at work has the potential to transform the world’s health.”
