Bostik – Big On Education with £40m Coleg Morgannwg Project

Bostik’s products delivered reliability and performance… they were proven to be compatible for the perfect install – Grant Cox, Director, Puma Floors

Located in Nantgarw, South Wales, Coleg Morgannwg’s new £40 million Nantgarw Campus is one of the most up-to-date and well equipped learning centres in the country. It is intended to be an iconic beacon for learning and education in the region. The development, designed by architects Boyes Rees, will offer a diverse range of subjects to thousands of students.

Main contractor Laing O’Rourke subcontracted the flooring work to Cardiff-based specialist Puma Floors Limited. The large scale of the project, covering over 10,000 m2 of flooring, meant Puma were faced with a number of challenges, and chief amongst these was the need to finish work on budget and on time to ensure following stages were not delayed.

Bostik, long term suppliers to Puma Flooring, recommended several products to ensure the job met requirements. This included Screedmaster One Coat Membrane to deal with any residual moisture, as it offers excellent coverage (25 m2 per 5Kg unit), one application is all that is required and it is suitable for up to 97% RH.

To provide for a level floor, Screedmaster 2 Ultimate was chosen. This is a two component, protein-free latex smoothing compound that is perfect smoothing sound, uneven floors prior to the laying of any decorative floor coverings. When mixed it provides impressive 6m 2 coverage as well as being low odour and can be used under a damp-proof membrane.

L79 Supertack was recommended for release bonding the carpet tiles which can be backed with PVC, polypropylene and bitumen with fibre backing. As a release system, the spot replacement of carpet tiles can be undertaken and then replaced without the need of further adhesive. Roller applied and also with excellent coverage (10 m2 / L) it is ideal for use over cementitious screeds.

Commenting on the installation and Bostik’s products Grant Cox, Director Puma Floors said: “A project of this scale requires products that have known characteristics and allow the job to be undertaken without fault or issues arising. Bostik’s products deliver these benefit as well as importantly complementing each other so they were proven to be compatible for the perfect install.”

Faith in the products and the support and technical advice of Bostik enabled Puma Flooring to specify the products with confidence and allowed the project to be undertaken and completed to schedule and without issue.
