Statistics: Index of Production, March 2014

Abstract

• Users are reminded that all figures contained within this release are seasonally adjusted estimates.
• Production output increased by 0.7% between Q4 2013 and Q1 2014.
• The largest contribution to the quarterly growth in production came from manufacturing, which increased by 1.4%.
• Production output increased by 2.3% between March 2013 and March 2014. This reflects increases of 3.3% in manufacturing; 12.1% in water supply, sewerage & waste management; and 3.1% in mining & quarrying.
• The only decrease was in electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning output, which decreased by 15.4% between March 2013 and March 2014. This was attributed to the average temperature in March 2014 being 4.5 degrees warmer than March 2013.
• Total production decreased by 0.1% between February 2014 and March 2014. There were decreases in two of the main sectors, with mining & quarrying being the largest contributor, decreasing by 2.8% and water supply, sewerage & waste management by 2.1%.
• Manufacturing and electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning output both increased by 0.5% between February 2014 and March 2014.
• The preliminary estimate of GDP, published on 29 April 2014, contained a forecasted rise of 0.8% for production in Q1 2014. This release of data estimates that production rose by 0.7% between Q4 2013 and Q1 2014 and the impact on the previously published Q1 2014 GDP estimate is minimal.
• In this release the earliest period open for revision was January 2014.
