Interface Gives Birmingham University a Transformation
Following a £180 million to investment in facilities at Birmingham City University, carpet tiles from global flooring manufacturer, Interface, were used to transform the University’s new city centre campus located in the Eastside regeneration zone.
Flooring contractors, Hillside Contracts, fitted over 8,000 square metres of Interface modular carpet tiles from its Transformation range which were specified for phase one of its city centre campus development.
The university sought a flooring solution that would deliver high end, contemporary design with the durability and ease of maintenance required in a high-traffic student environment.
Peter Cochrane, Project Director at Birmingham City University, said: “Interface offers an extensive range of quality, sustainable products, with scope for aesthetic flair. We typically specify products that support our ongoing maintenance strategy for being robust and easily interchangeable for local repairs.”
A neutral colour tone was used throughout the building, creating an attractive yet practical design. Earthy colours of Fern and Steppe from Interface’s Transformation range were used to achieve a subtle contrast, for added texture and style.
To reduce wastage and create a unique design, a non-directional method of installation was used, which involved laying the carpet tiles in a random design so all areas of the tile could be used. Allan Hemmings, Strategic Accounts Director at Interface said: “A great benefit of using a random design is the ease of maintenance as individual tiles can be easily removed and seamlessly replaced if they become damaged or worn.
Interface carpet tiles are an ideal flooring solution for use in areas which have to cope with high traffic levels. This can save the customer money by lengthening maintenance cycles. The Transformation range, which is specially designed with a highly textured patterned loop pile for extra hard-wear, was an ideal solution.”
