Carpet Recycling UK wins Gold Zero Waste Award

Carpet Recycling UK has added another accolade to its award-winning sustainable achievements by winning a Gold Zero Waste Award in the Partnership category of the Zero Waste Awards 2013.

It’s the second time this year that the industry scheme has gained recognition for its work in developing and progressing carpet reuse and recycling activities. In May 2013, CRUK won a Resource Revolution Award for its Landfill Diversion Strategy.

Commenting on the Zero Waste Award, organised by Letsrecycle.com, CRUK Director Laurance Bird said: “We are thrilled to receive this award that honours the sustained efforts across the entire flooring supply chain in capturing and diverting increasing tonnages of waste carpet from landfill.

“Innovation and input from manufacturers, flooring contractors, distributors and retailers continues to drive our success with landfill diversion rising from 2% to 21.4% in four years,” continued Laurance, who also paid tribute to the support of CRUK’s 13 core funders and their commitment to achieving zero production waste to landfill.

“By working in partnership with the private, public and community sectors, CRUK is firmly committed to the principles of the Waste Hierarchy and embracing circular economy opportunities, which are transforming attitudes to unwanted carpet,” he added.

As a Gold Zero Waste Award recipient, CRUK is automatically entered into the Zero Waste Platinum Award category for the 2014 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.

CRUK impressed judges with its commitment to applying the waste hierarchy on a difficult waste stream.

Carpet Recycling UK was formed in 2008 to tackle the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arising annually in the UK. Its target is 25% landfill diversion by 2015.
