Spotlight: Rover’s Ripped Oak

Alongside their large collection of hard wooden floors Rover’s Flooring has also this year started producing Ripped Oak.

Made from Oak Railway Sleepers, Ripped Oak is taken from the heart of the tree which allows for heart cracks whilst minimising sapwood.

The grain is then ripped apart resulting in tears, rips, cracks, shakes and sharp edges to give wonderful feature rich characteristics reminiscent of floors of years gone by.

Rover’s Flooring produce 10 different stunning variations of their Ripped Oak.

Some of the variations involve various fuming (also known as smoking) levels to achieve specific depth of shades.

Fuming exposes Oak flooring to Ammonia which in turn creates a response from the natural tannins of Oak.

Every batch will come out somewhat different and will have a natural shade variety throughout the batch creating a truly unique floor.

One of the Ripped Oak variations makes use of a hand applied Grey reactive base coat which also responds to the tannins in the Oak Flooring in a similar manner that Ammonia does when fuming.

It results in a stunning variety of natural grey shades (just like when wood turns grey in nature), whilst raising the grain in the wood.
