SIKABOND CHOSEN FOR NEPTUNE’S FLAGSHIP SHOWROOM

Neptune, the furniture wholesaler has specified SikaBond AT-80 for its Swindon head office and showroom. The unique elastic hybrid adhesive, which has been developed to achieve full surface bonding on all timber floors, has been used to help install elegant oak flooring in Neptune’s new office and showroom.

Due to the growth of Neptune’s business, which includes not only quality garden furniture and interior furniture for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms but also accessories and a planned expansion into the retail sector, the company found that it had outgrown its former premises. A year ago, Neptune moved out of its warehouse and into a much larger single-storey building, which offered 20,000sq ft of office and showroom space.

A new mezzanine floor was created in part of the building to separate the offices and showroom. The Neptune staff moved into its newly refurbished first floor office in January 2012, while the ground floor showroom is due to open by the end of this year.

A key part of the design for the two new floors was the use of quality oak flooring supplied by Neptune. SikaBond AT-80 was recommended as the most appropriate adhesive to install the boards. This new type of hybrid polymer combines the technology of a robust polyurethane (PU) with a modified silicone, which makes it unique and ensures it has elastic properties. Its elasticity enables the adhesive to reduce the passage of footfall sound, which can be a serious issue in timber floors at first floor level.

Tim Buxton who heads up the property development of Neptune Europe researched the flooring adhesive market thoroughly and found SikaBond AT-80 to be a good product and the most cost-effective.

“I liked the fact that the SikaBond adhesive is available all over the UK and it’s not difficult to source. Sika also has a whole range of different types available and the adhesive also comes in large tubs, which is very useful for big projects,” said Tim Buxton. “It’s the first time we have specified a Sika product and it has been very straightforward and cost-effective to apply, we would certainly use the product again on another project”.

SikaBond AT-80 is available in an easily transportable 17kg tub and when applying on to a surface, which can be cement, wood, ceramic, metal, glass and chipboard, it is easy to spread and has a good retention of trowel profile. An added bonus of the adhesive is that once it’s been applied and even fully cured, any drips or residue can still be removed from a timber floor without degrading the overall finish.
