Scottish Employers Encouraged To Hire Young People

A new award from people management specialists, Investors in People (IiP), will provide an incentive for Scottish businesses to recruit young people.

The new award will be piloted by IiP Scotland with £35,000 worth of support from the Scottish Government, in order to ‘help employers understand the potential benefits of recruiting young people and provide recognition for those already with a strong youth policy.’

Angela Constance, Scotland’s minister for youth employment, said the new award will:

…help sell the benefits to firms not yet fully aware of how their economic growth could be boosted by the addition of some new talent. It will also ensure those that have already taken steps to build up a young workforce, are properly recognised for doing so.

The announcement was made as part of Skills Development Scotland’s Make Young People Your Business Week, which runs from Monday 26 to Friday 30 August. A series of activities will raise awareness of ‘the economic benefits of recruiting and developing young people.’

The UK Commission’s Employer Skills Survey 2011 found that just 25 per cent of Scottish employers had taken an education leaver into their first role within the last two to three years.
