New Build Office gets First Class Flooring

Commercial floor and wall covering specialists, A Cumberlidge Ltd, have delivered a first class finish to a brand new office development for VolkerRail on the J3 Business Park in Doncaster.

Contracted directly by Alan Morris, owner of J3 Business Park, construction commenced on the purpose-built building in September 2015 and the A Cumberlidge team started work on site in January.

Explains Damian Bradley, project manager for A Cumberlidge: “When I first met with Alan he outlined that VolkerRail wanted a development delivered to a very high standard and specification and one that would match the company’s existing premises in the UK.

“We worked alongside the main contractor as well as Gary Crowell, facilities manager for VolkerRail, to discuss requirements and ensure we provided a variety of different floor and wall coverings that were entirely fit for purpose for a busy office environment. At the same time, we had to ensure that everything was delivered on budget and in a tight timescale.”

States Gary Crowell, facilities manager for VolkerRail: “As the end user of the development we were very clear as to what we wanted from the building and how we wanted it to look and function for the 170 members of staff, who would eventually work out of this office.

“All of the flooring and wall tiles had to complement the American walnut panelling that was a key feature for the majority of the space and we specified Times Square carpet tiles from Gradus. These specific tiles included grey and blue lines that helped incorporate our corporate colours, and were ideally suited as a flooring solution for the stairs, office spaces, corridors and meeting areas.”

Continues Gary: “In reception, the break-out area on the first floor and all of the toilets, we chose a non-slip, slate-style porcelain floor tile in Felitia Grey from Topps Tiles. Damian sourced the large format ceramic wall tiles, Citysense Moon from the Yorkshire Tile Company for tiling behind the sinks and in the shower enclosures. This combination of ceramic tiles is particularly eye-catching and has given us very stylish washroom facilities!”

Outlines Damian” “The first stage for us was to lay a total of 280 square metres of the slate-style porcelain floor tiles in the toilets, showers, first floor breakout area and the reception. We then worked on the shower walls fitting 80 square metres of the Citysense Moon wall tiles, which include three different pattern finishes – Timber, Cement and Stone – as well 15 square metres of large format white gloss ceramic tiles above the work surfaces in the kitchen areas.

“The second phase involved the supply and installation of 1500 square metres of Times Square Gradus floor tiles. These particular tiles are cushion-backed so are very comfortable to walk on but also extremely hardwearing and easy to clean and maintain which was a key requirement for Gary. These tiles are on the staircase inside the building too, an area we paid close attention to choosing to use the tiles as the stringer along the wall at each side of the stairs.

“We then moved to the three kitchen areas included in the building. The team fitted 80 square metres of Polysafe Vogue Ultra vinyl in Galactica, a striking black vinyl with blue and silver chips that is both abrasion and wet slip resistant and simple to clean. The vinyl really complements the floor tiles and enhances the overall corporate branding in the office.

“We also fitted 10 square metres of Interlay anti-static, loose laid rubber floor tiles from Jaymart in the company’s server room.

“Finally, to complete the work, we installed 10 square metres of Gradus Boulevard 5000HD matting tiles in Moorhen to the inner reception area and Gradus Esplanade 6000 aluminium 12mm thick , open construction with black PVC scaper wipers in the revolving door area which forms the main entrance to the offices.”

Adds Gary: “Footfall, and therefore daily wear and tear, is high throughout the building something that Damian and the team understood from day one. They also worked with us to specify products that wouldn’t cause us any problems to keep clean and tidy – we had some tarmac, for example, stuck to some of the carpets tiles after the car park was surfaced but the debris was quite easy to remove.

“We’re really pleased with the end result and we’ve had nothing but positive comments from staff and visitors alike. The A Cumberlidge team undoubtedly did a superb job that has resulted in a very high quality new office which is exactly what our brief dictated.”

Concludes Alan Morris, owner of J3 Business Park: “The A Cumberlidge team were both meticulous and methodical in their work which resulted in a first class flooring solution for VolkerRail.”
