The fit out of new centralised depot facility for one of Scotland’s biggest councils has featured the use of Tremco illbruck movement joints to ensure the long term stability of the floorcoverings laid along the main corridor.
Fife Council’s new premises are located on the Bankhead Business Park in Glenrothes and were originally constructed by an American company, but left unfinished. The current work has therefore made the property structurally complete as well as executing the fit out. Veitchi Flooring from Edinburgh was the specialist sub-contractor awarded the contract to install all of the carpet tiles and sheet vinyl products throughout the building.
Following a specification from Fife’s Property services department, Veitchi employed Tremco illbruck’s Interspan FKN 35/15 movement joints: selected because they presented the slimmest possible sightline, and therefore minimum visual interruption to the flooring in the seven metre wide, 130 metres long concourse.
The installation also made use of the manufacturer’s Tremco SX 301 smoothing compound to take out small irregularities in the sub-floor. This followed a series of tests by Tremco illbruck’s regional technical manager, Simon Grant, to ensure the requirements of BS8203 were met in respect of maximum moisture content.
Neil Wishart of Fife Council commented: “When we took over this building, originally started 10 years ago, there was only some 75 per cent of the slab laid, so we had to complete it before we could lay the floorcoverings. In respect of the movement joints for the main 130 metre long corridor we were looking for very narrow profiles, but the smallest we could find to begin with were about 75 mm wide.
“Following discussions with Veitchi and a search on the web, we identified the Interspan FKN 35 mm joint. This has worked well, in place every 15 metres: the installation of the flooring looks very good and now the council is using the building as offices for some of its services.”
The Contracts Manager for Veitchi Flooring, Mr Derek McArthur, added “We have branches in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, covering the whole of Scotland, and although we had never used this type of movement joint before we are familiar with Tremco’s product range as a whole. We had on-site assistance from the manufacturer’s rep, and we had no trouble installing the joints which run across the main street corridor.”
