Milliken wins ‘Made in the North West’ Green Manufacturers Award

Milliken was amongst those to be honoured at Insider‘s annual Made in the North West Awards on May 4th 2017 collecting the top prize for green manufacturer / sustainable manufacturer.

The awards recognise the most ambitious and innovative companies operating in the sector. The judges said: “Milliken’s culture clearly embraces the environmental needs of customers with clear KPIs that show improvements.” Milliken has designed and manufactured floor coverings from its Wigan plant for over 25 years.

The factory employs close to 600 staff and supplies Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa from its state of the art facility in the North West of England.

Manufacturing is pivotal to the North West economy and the region’s manufacturers remain among the most innovative and dynamic in the world.

Now in their fifth year, Insider’s Made in the North West Awards are a celebration of all that’s great about manufacturing. They applaud the use of technology, the ambition to export and the motivation to train and invest in people.

They are a showcase for the region and its diverse manufacturing industries, ranging from life sciences to artisan food brands.

In the green manufacturer / sustainable manufacturer catgory the judges were looking for “the company that has demonstrated the greatest commitment, through its products and processes, to forging a low carbon manufacturing future for their region.

To have made the greatest commitment to reducing the impact of manufacturing on the environment.” Milliken, along with all the North West winners will automatically go through to the grand final Made in the UK, where the best of British manufacturing will be celebrated.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything Milliken does and is demonstrated in every aspect of the manufacturing process.

Milliken uses high recycled content such as Econyl® yarn made from 100% regenerated nylon. In 2017 Milliken introduced a significant R&D breakthrough at its Wigan factory with ‘Re-Vision’ technology.

The new technology, developed by Milliken, enables used carpet tile to be reprocessed at the end of its life. 40% of the material is captured for re-use as new tile backing and the remainder is converted to process energy to help power the plant.

Milliken’s Wigan factory operates in accordance with ISO14001, ISO9001, ISO14006 (design for environmental guidance) and LEAN manufacturing principles for efficiency.
